| zest for life |
I try and bring my readers a varied spectrum of people who share my passion for fitness. The constant push for me is that nearly each one of them is a bigger achiever in their field and possess more determination and drive than I do. One would argue why compare? I agree, but this is also I guess the reason each one fascinates me as I get to know them. My protagonist today is a homemaker and mother of two grown boys. She has the energy and the spark of someone at least a decade and a half younger that her age. She has worked her way to who she’s, proud in her skin and body. She is a more disciplined version of thousands of women, including me, living at a higher plane of focus on her health and body. She’s the Indian woman having spent over two decades caring for her family and her children and now she’s giving herself grace and putting her dreams in the spotlight. She’s me, she’s you, she’s us.

Nimish Agarwal has been the President of the Rotary Club, Powai in 2021-2022. She has also been on the Rotary board of directors, Powai every year since 2016. She’s a clinical dietician, Mumbai university, 2021-2022 and Reebok Certified Coach, 2019. She now works as a practicing dietician and health coach.
Growing up in Nainital, she went to boarding school from her 4th to 12th grades. She says that that’s where she learnt to wake with the sound of a bell and accept that her day would be a series of slots of time where she would do different activities. Today, she’s been doing that for over 25 years for her fitness. Waking up and at least remembering her bell to ‘start’ and ‘end’ her workout sessions. Let’s take a minute to let that sink in. 25yrs of dedication to oneself. All those months of sweat shed showing respect to her body.
She completed her Masters in Organic Chemistry,1995 in Lucknow, after which she got married and shifted to Mumbai at an early age of 22. In Mumbai she knew no one other than her husband and she says she could concentrate on bringing up her kids and live the ‘perfect’ younger version of her life. Her father, Shri Narottam Das Agarwal, especially was the family’s anchor for a long part of their lives and in 2015, they lost him. At this phase, she experienced difficulties and hardships to cope with his absence. She entered a ‘dark’ period of her life in which she had to overcome depression leading to severe weight loss. She then got operated at 42yrs for a gynecological issue which led to a serious health ailment that took months to cure. She says that what she remembers is that even in these darkest moments of her life, she took strength from her inner flame and her supportive family and never gave up. A large credit in this period goes to her husband Pankaj and her mother, Mrs. Asha Agarwal who picked her up along with the pieces of despair that she found herself in. A small and needed reminder to all of us that mental health issues can & do happen to someone we think living the perfect life. Physical issues and accidents that cause them can & do happen to those who always seemed like pillars of strength representing healthy bodies.
Today Nimish has run for over 10+ years doing several 10K runs, 3 Ladakh half marathons, Tata Mumbai half marathons (TMM) 8 times, Navy half marathons 6 times and continues to run every week. She has also done several unique events like Snowdonia mountain UK in 2024, Everest base camp, trekking for 11kms a day for 11 days in sub zero temperatures, learnt to ski in 2016 in Gul’s marg (Kashmir) all of her own and participated in Hyrox that was held in September in Mumbai this year. Trekking in fact has been a part of her childhood where she and her family did many expeditions in the Himalayas. She has since gone solo to trek with Trek Nomad kind of organisations and done several treks in Himachal including the Triund trek, Karari lake, Hampta Pass etc. Her favourite workouts are weight training and functional workouts. A shoutout to her coach Ravi Agre, Forest Club, Hiranandani who helped her start her journey when she was getting well and her current Master coach Sachin Tamang, Nitro Gym. And yes during Covid she used to climb her 35 storeyed building four times in a day and she participated in online 21kms runs. So yes, sport that be done anywhere and she proves that she doesn’t have any excuses. Another thing I need to work on.

Below are Nimish’s own words.
A “fitness mindset” is how you think about your ability to succeed. It affects how you respond to challenges, how consistent you are, and how you handle setbacks. It's what helps you keep showing up—even when you're tired, busy, or just not feeling it.
Running has given me a new lease of Life!
Running has given me a an opportunity to challenge my strength and fitness! When i run in that hours of morning amidst the flora and fauna or on treadmill, it clears my mind and helps me discover my inner self & strength.
