The Mercat Cross

this cross is on the Royale Mile or the main street of old Edinburgh. This structure served as a place of proclamation & also a place of punishment for small crimes. Although the punishments didn't seem small to me. Having a culprit's ear's cartilage nailed to the structure that was wooden back then was common. They were then jeered, spit on and left to be harassed by people passing the street. When their time was up the culprits had to pull themselves out of the nail. Horrendous!

Edinburgh has a very old and historical look and field to it. There are many stories that are worth knowing. I have put together some of the photos. I will do some of the stories separately.

For food, I recommend 'The Gurkha' which is a Nepalese restaurant that serves Nepalese & Indian food. Absolutely delicious and value for money. The restaurant has amazing old character and the roof was some kind of woodwork that I have never seen.

A visit I also recommend is to the oldest tavern or inn 'The White Hart'.
