When Two Times meet - Short story - Fiction

The waiting room at the courthouse was packed as usual. It was midday after all. The clock was nearing noon and Desai was starting to feel his tummy rumble. He looked at the mobile phone in his hand and saw the message he'd received. Ah yes! Aswad would be a lovely choice at lunchtime. It was always so difficult to get a table there on the weekdays. Finally, he would be able to enjoy the mango curry and the special Marathi Thali. His wife, the judge, was just on the other side of the wall and would be getting out in ten minutes. He hadn't seen her this morning and he looked forward to asking her how her day had been. As he shifted in the chair, the lady in the pink cotton sari next to him shifted and sighed. She was sweating quite a bit, he noticed.

Feeling the sweat drip off her nose, Swati pulled out her handkerchief. Her body was warm despite the draft of the air conditioner just above the seat she had chosen. She looked at the time on her mobile phone. She had just checked it a few moments earlier. But why was it still showing the same minute? All she wanted was to go to the other side of the wall and hear the verdict. Her mind kept sending her hundreds of negative outcomes and she kept trying to remember where she had kept her praying beads. Ah, they were in her hand and she was moving the beads. 'Get back to the next mantra,' she heard her Guru in her mind's eye saying on his YouTube channel. She prayed that at the end of the 10 minutes, she could hear that her son had just received a fine and no prison time. Going home without seeing him for another weekend would be criminal. She knew the judge was a mature woman who had little tolerance for crimes against women. 'My son is innocent', screamed her heart as the minutes painfully passed on the screen of her mobile.
