A Recipe For Love : Grandma Linda Mutti who bakes a Special Cake for Each of her 5 Grandchildren

Linda Bogaert

The one thing that binds most of us humans on this earth is our love for food. Our love for good food and most of all our love for desserts. It all begins usually when we're kids and as each birthday shows up, we have a party thrown in our honour. Everyone who loves us shows up, the whole house is decorated and we're wearing our best outfit.

No party would be complete without the star of the show, a beautiful birthday cake, would it? Imagine having a beautiful birthday cake that you've imagined and asked for turning up each time at the centre table. This is the dream that my colleague Linda Bogaert offers each of her 5 grandchildren on their birthday. They get to wish for a life size version of their dream cake. They need to come up with something that offers their granny enough of a challenge, that's a prerequisite.

Having always been someone who's organised, structured and with an inherent love for precision, Linda creates challenging cakes, starting from making sure that it will taste good, to being able to come up with ideas that avoid the cake from having a sweaty icing or any of the pieces breaking off as she transports it to the home of the grandchild in question.

Having worked a whole life in design and graphics, she's learnt to be patient with the process of making, re-doing if issues arise and relaxing to be able to create the exact vision that will give the cake the 'Wow' effect. Such is the perfect life of a happy baking granny.

Her grandchildren call her 'Mutti' which is 'Grandma' in German. Linda always wanted to be called this name by her grandchildren.

Find the the pictures of the cakes and the little text that Linda shared with me that I've translated.

'I'm the happy Mutti (grandmother) of 5 small children" she says, "and in their eyes, I'm the absolute queen of the layer cake!

Every year, I bake the birthday cake chosen by each one of them. They have complete freedom when it comes to the theme.

Aurore, who is 2 years old, with the help of her parents, chose: Barbapapa. Maëlle, at 5 chose the snail. Lior, all of 7 got me to bake a disco. Elena, also 7, requested a heart and Arlow, the oldest at 10, placed an order for a Harry Potter cake. It's always a new challenge because, of course, there's no way I'd do the same theme twice. Where's the fun in that? What I know is that these memories will be forever etched in their hearts, and seeing their eyes light up when they discover the cake is pure joy. That's my greatest reward.'
