Poochitta - a poem for my aunt's 84th birthday - English with some Malayalam words
![]() |
A bouquet of flowers for my Poochitta |
On the 30th of July was the 84th 'Shathabhishekam' birthday of my Daddy's sister Mrs. Subhadra Bhaskaran. In India, most youngsters call their elders not by their first names but by names and titles that the family uses from forever. Poo is the 'pseudo' for her and Chitta means 'paternal aunt'. So, she was always called as Poochitta by all of us. I wrote this poem which brings out her personality quite well I think. 'Poo' in Malayalam means flower and 'Poocha' in Malayalam is cat. So now with these words translated you can follow the rhyme . Poochitta has always been simple and naive for many things, but very intelligent, disciplined and an achiever on the other hand.
Poochitta, you’re a very beautiful and interesting person before being our family. Anyone meeting you must feel a bit jealous that you’re not in their family
I have put down these words..
I can find them easily because of the openness and kindness and communications we have had over my lifetime. You’ve so many aspects that I’ve no idea about I’m sure.
Please accept this as my gift to you …
Why 'Poochitta' one asks ?
Poo for flower is so apt,
For a heart that’s as tender
as the petals a flower wears
She defines faith and surrender
Like a flower stands
In all of nature’s glory,
Proud and well dressed
And also strong in it’s fury
Our Chitta is standing tall,
Welcoming anything coming her way,
her innocence one can say
Has kept miseries away
Poo for Poocha one thinks,
Why not she could be
One such feline being
Her nature is always ..
Protective and caring
She can get through a
Lot of ups and downs,
Others around her adjusting
Easy so that she can
Wear her crown
Nimble on her feet,
Largely doing what she wants..
Symbolising a free spirit,
Her decades have
Easily kept the observer warped
Learning to drive in
Her sixth decade,
Waking up daily
To conquer her steps
Whatever may come,
To the day invade
Mangatholi and thengakola,
Her mighty champions til date
Maybe my aunt is a OOPschitta ?
I think as I debate
The number of OOPs moments
She may have had and seen,
In 84 years .. I think would stand witness
The minds of all and sundry,
Wondering how can holding a secret
Bring to a soft heart
Such a lot of stress
AYYO is her strong repartie,
she exemplifies the usage
And stands tall as a Malayali
Her beauty is above all
Shining on her face and on our screen,
When she’s in her best garb,
Her gentle aura radiates through and through,
Making her our favourite scene
